A recent study by the University of Washington found that people tend to trust artificial intelligence (AI) systems more when they make decisions that go against their own interests.
The researchers say this could have major implications for how AI is deployed in the future, particularly when it comes to security and other critical applications.
“If we’re going to rely on AI systems to make decisions that impact our lives, it’s important to understand how much trust we’re putting in them,” said lead author Azim Shariff, a UW assistant professor of psychology and co-director of the Social Cognition & Morality Lab. “Our research suggests there may be limits to that trust.”
In one experiment, participants read about a hypothetical self-driving car that needed to decide whether to swerve into oncoming traffic or stay the course and risk hitting a pedestrian. When the car decided to swerve, sacrificing its passengers to save the pedestrian, people tended to say it was the right decision – even though it went against their own personal interests as passengers in the car.
But when participants were asked about a different scenario in which an AI system decided not to swerve and instead hit the pedestrian, they were much less likely to endorse its decision. In this case, people felt like they had been betrayed by the system – even though it had made what appeared to be a more ethical choice.
Lack of quality data
When about ethical decision-making, AI is only as good as the data it relies on. And unfortunately, much of the data that is used to train AI models is of poor quality. This can lead to ethical problems down the line, as AI systems make decisions based on inaccurate or biased data.
